Learning to Look at Modern Art and sharing some thoughts and interesting info with the world.

Cézanne experimented with the human figure in his bathers paintings like this one, especially towards the end of his life. He was interested in alternative ways of treating this traditional subject, as many other artists Degas, Renoir, Gauguin and Seurat for instance. Cézanne was the most radical, however, since he wanted to use the figures as building-blocks for his composition. He was not interested in naturalism in the traditional sense. Cézanne’s experimentation provided Picasso with an alternative approach to the human figure, as did African sculpture.
