Buy, buy, American pie (Christies’ style)

The original manuscript of Don McLean’s American Pie is set to be auctioned at Christie’s on April 7. The 16-page document is expected to fetch between 1 and 1.5 million dollar.

The song was originally released in 1971 and spent four weeks in the Billboard Hot 100. Although McLean has always refused to explain the many enigmatic passages in the song, the references to Buddy Holly and rock-and-roll were quite obvious. The song traces the roots of rock-and-roll from early beginning in the 50’s, through the turbulent 60’s, reflecting upon the loss of innocence America suffered during the political and cultural turbulences of that era.

Maybe a late valentine gift for your loved one?
